Lisbon subway map

The last of the first

Metro in the capital of Portugal emerged relatively recently, compared to other subways, which appeared in the capitals of Europe in the twentieth century. If the subway was the first in London, then in Lisbon subway appeared one of the last metropolitan subways. In 1959 it was opened, and then all of its further development was only just 45 years later. If the original Lisbon subway was only a preparation for the branches, blue, yellow and green, later they started to grow only after a certain time. The red line, which is our number 4, in the beginning built only in 1998. Currently, Metropolitan of Lisbon is a complete network of rail lines that run throughout the city, and quite ornate. If the subway is usually constructed so that it can easily be streamlined, to compare with something like the major streets, the subway here is disorderly and crosses all in a row. Despite the proximity of the ocean and water at all, the subway was laid quite deep, although there are cases when the water level rose almost to the level of the underground, as, for example, is notorious in England. And because the current Metro of Lisbon can be classified as underground mediocre - not the deepest and most shallow, not the slowest and the fastest, not the smallest or the largest. In general, there is absolutely remarkable is nothing ordinary subway, created in the traditional style of southern Europe, so that if desired it can be easily compared to other subways, which are located close to Portugal.

The station after the station

However, I want to note the originality of the construction of the subway, because if normally when creating underground, trying to pass as much as possible at one time, the station is open almost as creation. Once the station was built and designed, it is immediately put into operation. Hard to say, it's dangerous or not, but so far none of the station is not collapsed, so that self-confidence of the builders here is justified. As the construction process, it should refer to the chronology of construction, in other words, the history of the draft Lisbon Metro. So, initially there was only one branch, divided into the north by halves. The southern part of it started to build later, but the result was the original design, which then required the proper separation. The upper part of the subway, and she became separated by the yellow line and a hook in the south became a green and connected to the yellow line at two points, forming a complete ring at the same time. Next to the green branch was attached at the side of another, the red, after which the Metropolitan was similar to the modern. It should be noted that color blue on the map prevailed until 1993, so that all the statements that formed underground branches in the 1960s is completely pointless and not substantiated. If you study the history of the building, even in the initial plans do not have four colors, there is only one thread that runs through the whole city. Yes, at that time, Lisbon was not as big as it is now, although the size is not everything is beneficial, because not everyone is able to properly use them. Here are the Portuguese and did not do too much underground – there are 46 stations and 37 kilometers, but everyone is happy.
